Imagination meets science.
Client: Imaginate Labs
Scope: Brand Identity + Website
Logo design, Style guide, Responsive website, Landing page
Imaginate Labs is a new tech startup with a passion for creating and writing about Open Source software. In a crowded market, they have a huge challenge to stand out amongst established brands like Github, Atlassian and Docker.
We were approached by Imaginate Labs because they had seen some of our previous work and thought we’d be a great fit to develop a unique brand identity and website.
I knew I had made the right choice in a designer when Wes presented me with the initial designs. I was not only surprised at how quickly he delivered the work but at the high degree of quality.
The thought behind each design stood out to me as a strength of Wes’ work.
His pleasant and friendly nature makes him fun to work with along with the exchange of ideas and feedback. The guidance he gave through the whole design process was also very reassuring that I would get a great result.
— Wayne Allen, Imaginate Labs
Our first challenge was to design two logos — one for Imaginate Labs, and one for ForkDB, the database management software they’re building.
The design brief stated that the logos should look like part of a family, and appeal to software development ‘hipsters’ who are familiar with brands like Github and Atlassian. The Imaginate Labs logo should also represent imagination and science.
After extensive research and brainstorming, we had a lightbulb moment: what if we created an imaginary character who became the face and voice of Imaginate Labs? They loved the idea, so we ran with it — creating an imaginary character, called Ivan, who wears science goggles and appears throughout the website and social media with various facial expressions and attire.
We decided it would be fun to include Ivan in the ForkDB logo too, so his hand appears holding a code fork icon, complimented by consistent colours and typography.
With two really solid logos and a colour palette, we approached the next stage with great confidence.
The landing page for ForkDB was simple, but we had to get it right — a single page with signup form, to grow interest while the product is still in development.
We worked hard to design an attractive landing page with strong copy and a clear call-to-action.
There were two main parts of the Imaginate Labs website to consider — the homepage and the blog — with our character, Ivan, as the centre of attention. The goals were clear: show off their Open Source products, and direct people to read the blog.
We worked closely with Imaginate Labs to design an engaging website, with a focus on content, and the unique voice of Ivan throughout.
Being a software development company, Imaginate Labs were keen to build out our designs themselves, so once our designs were approved we handed them over. To speed up the development process, we developed a style guide for the website, with styling for typography, buttons, images and forms.
The website and landing page are currently in development.
